I'm just posting a few pictures that hubby took at the recent nagashi some and suikawari. Our condo has a "children's event committee" which holds various events during the year. One of these events is nagashi somen/suikawari event. Somen is a thin noodle made with flour - like a very thin spaghetti. Japanese people eat this noodle cold, traditionally with some nori (seaweed) on top and dipped in a soy sauce based sauce with some onion. For nagashi somen, they build a contraption like a very long slide with a very slight decline out of bamboo or something similar, then as they pour water down this declining "pipe," also include little portions of somen. People stand/sit around the "pipes" and try to scoop up the somen from the moving water as it comes along. It's a fun way to eat noodles in the middle of a hot summer aye?
They also had a suikawari - or watermelon breaking contest - after the noodles. This is the Japanese form of a pinata I guess :D They put the watermelon in the middle of a big space, and one person at a time they cover up their eyes and try to hit the watermelon and break it in two. This is an activity also held a lot at the beach for some reason.
Audrey participated along with Alex and dad this year. She was also able to play there with several friends from school and day care who live within our condo.
