This past Saturday, Carl was readmitted to the hospital. He had been in pain for a week, but it had gotten so bad, that he could barely move, requiring an ambulance to come. The members of the ambulance squad, in turn, had to attach him to a chair lift and carry him -- VERY slowly -- down stairs. It was easily the worst pain I have ever seen Carl in, and it was unbearable to see him like this.
While I prepared things before the ambulance arrived, I admit, I got really pissed off at the whole thing. It seems at least twice a year, in the nearly eleven years that we've been together, Carl has been hospitalised. I said to Carl, "God, we might as well have a punch card like Subway at this rate -- 'Oh, you're here a tenth time, so it's free!'"
Carl, of course, didn't take well to this. "Well I'm sorry it's so fucking inconvenient for you. I can't help this!"
I, of course, aplogised later, after the doctor manhandled him and made him scream bloody murder. It turns out it was sciatica, and the only thing they could do, was give him pain meds and muscle relaxers. They sent him home, and let me tell you, it was fun getting him up three flights of stairs in his condition.
He seems somewhat better now, but he hasn't been back to work yet. Baby steps ...
