Interestingly, my friend Tzachee loves the Sarit version, and I love the slower Mei version. Regardless, it seems impossible for a man to cover this song by "adjusting" the wording to a male singer. In Hebrew, adjectives and most verbs reflect gender, and even the title, "free," is in the feminine (the masculine xofshi is one syllable short to actually fitting and ruins the rhyme scheme.
