When I was a teenager, I went to Cairo, IL with my church youth group and we worked on a Habitat for Humanity house there. Even to my (fairly-sheltered) eyes it was a troubled and struggling place at that point. We heard gunshots as we were working, you know? Ugh. But it's sad that it has continued to deteriorate.
