[Nostalgia] 2XL

I work with a man whose girlfriend is expecting, and he has been looking online at some of the toys he had growing up, and he had been contemplating buying some of them and introducing them to his son as the child gets older. This in turn led to a discussion on toys we grew up with, and I pulled up the image above. "Did you grow up with one of these?"

"... I don't even know what that IS," he replied.
"It's an eight track player that looks like a ROBOT."
"Then no, no I didn't. I didn't think you were that old!"

Maybe not, but as a child in a family that was frequently poor, we got a lot of things after everyone else, as it was simply cheaper to get things secondhand. This explains why I, for example, grew up with a 2 XL. There's a great site about this toy here, but basically, it was in fact a large eight track player; the track buttons and tracks on various tapes that were meant for the system were laid out in a way to play various quiz games and interactive stories.

Yeah, 2XL was a character. Anyone else thinking of Mr. Smithers on The Simpsons after seeing the clip? ^_^
