[Multilingual Monday] WHORE!!!
English has developed a unique usage with the word "whore" -- an "attention whore" is someone who desperately needs to have all eyes on him, and one could easily say that my last post might make me a "comment whore" (someone needing to have comments on a blog post or a FaceBook status, etc.). but do either of these terms have an equivalent usage in another language?
Hebrew seems to have lifted this phrase directly from English, if Google is any indication, as "זונת תשומת לב", zonat tsumat lev" (zonat, the construct of zona, "whore"; tsumat lev, "attention"), and זונת תשומי, zonat tsumi, pops up here and there (tsumi being an abbreviation of tsumat lev).
With Japanese 娼婦, shoufu, can't be used that way as far as I'm aware. The equivalent of an "attention whore" would be 目立ちたがり屋, medachitagariya, from the verb 目立つ, medatsu, "to stand out". the tagariya suffix can be used to mean "someone who craves" something, as seen in 知りたがり屋, shiritagariya, "curious" (someone who yearns to know things), 自慢したがり屋, jimangatariya, "braggart" (someone who craves to boast), and 出たがり屋, detagariya, "lens louse" (someone on TV or film who has to be in every frame). "Ticklish" also uses this (くすぐったがり屋, kusuguttagariya, from 擽ったい, kusuguttai, also "embarrassing").
So, those who speak other languages: what is an "attention whore" in your language? "Comment whore"? I'd love to hear other examples.
