[Geocaching Adventures] Sanitarium

Sunday was Geocaching Day here in Peoria. Our friend Ben was staying this weekend and one thing was certain: we were going geocaching with Jamie and Mark. The first order of business was to try to find caches we couldn't find now that we had another set of eyes, and we managed to find three that alluded us the first (few!) times, including a train that was part of the Fondulac Park system that had been visited by us on multiple visits. It turns out? We put forth way too much work in a few of these as the solutions were SO SIMPLE.

We opted to go to Bartonville on Jamie's advice, where there exists (in the above pictures) the old Peoria State Hospital and its cemetery not far away. The hospital itself has its windows smashed and has been abandoned for decades, and both the hospital and the cemetery are claimed to be haunted; the grave above is the grave for an A. Bookbinder, a patient at the hospital who couldn't speak, but was known to weep against an old willow tree in the cemetery. Legend has it that you can still hear him crying to this day.

More about the hospital can be found here, whereas a writeup about the cemetery can be found here.
