Dinner Conversation

Carl and I went to have pizza yesterday, and for whatever reason, the topic of conversation most of the time was what we wanted the other to do after we died. I have no idea where it came from, but now Carl knows about Jewish funerals and I know that Carl wants to be cremated and have a friend of his scatter his ashes ( Read more... )

It's all your frame of reference, isn't it? Someone once asked my Russian friend Mozhu, back when her mother was ailing, "Have you ever talked about things relating to...the end of life?" "Oh, all the time!" was her response. She once opened a letter from her father and found it consisted of a typewritten page with the header "ON THE DISPOSAL OF MY REMAINS".

monshu and I aren't quite that advanced, but we've talked about our dying wishes plenty of times. He's written out the instructions and left them with his sister. I keep meaning to do something like that but, really, I don't much care. Whatever my survivors need to do to help their grieving is okay with me (though I love the thought of them having an Irish-style wake). Of course, knowing that they're fulfilling your wishes is one of the most helpful things for them, so I really should spell something out for them.

I want my ashes to be scattered around or maybe someone should plant a tree using my ashes. :)
