Multilingual Monday Cherokee Followup
This past Monday I wrote a small write-up about trying to coin computer terms in the Cherokee language. Just as a brief follow-up I figured I'd follow up with a few of my own attempts at coining. Again, no guarantee if these are the best choices or if anyone would ever actually use said terms, or hell, even if these are correct!:
ᎠᏙᏈ ᎠᏙᏈ ᏓᏗᏟᎶᏍᏍᎩᏗᎢ, Adoqui Didatlilosdisgii, "Adobe Photoshop." Adoqui is a transliteration -- there's no B or even P in Cherokee -- and didatlilosdisgi is a photographer, with the -i at the end indicating that it's a place pertaining to photographers, something like the Chinese coining 照相館. The root here can also mean "to draw a picture of someone or something," so I think it fits. So why not use "photograph"? See below.
ᎠᏙᏈ ᎠᏟᎶᏍᏙᏙᏗ, Adoqui Atlilosdohdohdi, "Adobe Illustrator." The second word should look similar to the word I used for "Photoshop", and that's because tlilos can mean photography, illustration, and even art. -dohdi indicates "instrument for xxx," hence "Instrument for illustration".
ᎪᎴᎵ ᎠᏑᏫᏍᏙᏗ, Koleli Asuwisdisdohdi, "Corel Painter". Koleli an obvious transliteration, and Asuwisdi indicates paint or painting + the instrumental suffix.
ᎪᎴᎵ ᎯᏍᏓᏅᏅᎦ, Koleli Hisdinvnvga, "Corel Draw". The last part is the verb indicating "draw a line" in the command form.
ᎦᎶᏁᏗᎢm, Galonidii, "Paint Shop Pro". I have no idae what a good word for "pro" would be in Cherokee, but the "paint shop" part is there, with "paint" having the -i place suffix.
Don't forget, these programs are used on ᏦᎳᏂ, Jolani, "Windows", or ᎹᎬᏙᏏ, Makvtosi, "Macintosh". ^o^ Man, some of these are really hard -- I have yet to find a Cherokee equivalent or even near-equivalent, for example, to an "acrobat" -_-
