It's a low-set table with a heater underneath; in olden days it was a table that covered a charcoal heater inset in the ground. The user then slides his body under the blankets and stays warm in underinsulated/uninsulated houses (which is still quite a bit of Japan).

Oh, I can imagine it perfectly. I might not be fond of cold winter nights, but there's something about being blanketed in heat on a cold night that I love.

Toguri Imports in Chicago had them when I lived there. They were horrendously expensive, but available.

I second that. I would love to see how we could build such a thing. Any suggestions? This otter-architect-in-training also has a taste for interior design. I'd love to help.

You need them built-in with stadium seating with lumbar support and a massage unit.
