What about flowers, plants, geological formations, etc?

I certainly have no problem with these, though my question is -- what do you do for the "word cards", if the picture cards are of flowers, plants, geological formations, etc.

Stephen and I both think a cool idea would be famous works of art. The pairings would be the artwork and the artist. Imagine doing your own take on the Mona Lisa or The Scream? It could be fun.

That is a neat idea, but it kind of puts a damper on the idea of individual artists making cards, unless it's artist renditions of famous works?

That's exactly the idea. Each person doing the card would do their own interpretation of a famous piece. Imagine a manga version of the Mona Lisa... it could be quite creative.
