To see if I can throw in a few things outside that:
For many years, I was immersed in the activities of my university’s judo club. I scheduled my classes and chose jobs (generally with the university itself) to accommodate the club’s training and competition activities. At a few different times I was dating the entire women’s judo team, and eventually got my brother, my wife, and my sister-in-law in as club members. I started as the least promising white belt imaginable, left (with my college graduation) as the departing chief instructor and 2nd degree black belt. And my grown-up life immediately became so complicated and demanding that I’ve done next to nothing with judo since that time.
I’m retired military, but I went about it by a different route. The first ten years was with the Air National Guard, during which time I never went anywhere or did anything outside the contiguous United States. Then I was out for ten years, then I went into the Army Reserve … and I did so for the specific purpose of going to war, in the military processing center I asked which of the units I could go to were most likely to deploy soonest and most often, and the one at the top of the list was the one I chose. I managed four overseas deployments before I was out due to age, and had really hoped to squeeze in one more but the change of national priorities shifted the scheduling out of my reach.
I’ve been married twice, but both times to the same woman … again, incorporating a ten-year intermission. We put in a lot more care and preparation before going into the second marriage, and - though we’ve run into problems, some of them the same as during the first marriage - we’ve dealt with things a lot better this time through.
Both of our kids are grown and married, and both living internationally. My son married a Chinese woman and is living in China (and our only grandchild is half-Chinese); my daughter married an Irishman and now lives in Ireland.
I’ve been writing Buffyfic since 1999, and fanfic of a type since the Seventies (though that first phase ended in 1981).
And - as anyone following my LJ is already very aware - for a little over a year now my wife and I have been living and traveling in a 24-foot motorhome.
That, I think, should be more than enough to answer the question.
