What is there about meddlesome ancient powers (or their offspring proxies) who have the impulse control of a five year old that I'm supposed to develop an emotional attachment with?

Said differently, what makes this significantly any different from The Osbournes?

I should note, I'm not asking about emotional investment. Story builds investment/attachment. I'm asking about the initial emotional attraction to make me care enough to get to the story in the first place.
