A week before

It’s fall already. Yellow and brown leaves were piled up at the edge of the lawn. Satoru closed his eyes and smelled the crisp evening air. He couldn’t believe it. Only months ago he was still that shut in who had not set foot outside his room for a year. And now, he felt his lips started to tug into a smile again.

‘You’re smiling for no reason.’

He opened his eyes and looked at Masaru in irritation.

They were sitting in a lonely public park, each facing a small plastic container of takoyaki.

He had just finished his magic lesson and training at school and was looking to have a rest when Masaru called to say he’s in town and how about having dinner together since his photo session had ended unexpectedly early.

‘I just got a message from Takeru,’ Masaru held up his shiny new phone to show him the writing on the small screen.

It was Takeru all right.

‘It’s chibiko’s birthday next week! Don’t forget to come back home from wherever you are at that time and show your lily ass here. And drag Satoru with you! I’ll kill you both if I don’t see your girly faces by this time next week.’

He laughed at the message. The biker gang leader should really have learned by now that he would never make them scared of him in a million years.

‘You’ll be there, right?’ Masaru asked him earnestly.

‘Of course I will.’ He answered lightly.

She was everything to him, even if she would have never learned the truth. Not in this lifetime. Not from him anyway.

Today

And so here he is, back at the castle.

His backpack full of clothes for a few days and a small baby blue box he spent hours to pick and wrap just the day before.

What should you give your sister for her birthday?

Should he buy her a book? Or jewelry? A small ring, or earring, or pendant for her necklace? He even contemplated to give Masaru a call before he remembered that Masaru used to hate, no, not hate, scared of girls. He bet that his girly model brother would know fuck all about girls.

He was at the bookshop, ready to tear his hair in frustration. Maybe he should have called Sho for advice even if he didn’t want to, but at the very last minute his eyes caught the sight of a diary. It was light blue, like the sky. And it’s the color he would always associate her with. She was like a sky to him. A wide open space, full of light and possibility.

The castle door opens once he gives the password. Still that silly trivial fact about Yamakawa Yutaka.

The living room is empty. The party must be held somewhere else.

He can hear the sound of laughter from the back veranda. Her laughter.

Slowly he walks the empty hallway to the wooden deck where all the noise comes from. The heavy tall door is slightly ajar and he lightly pushes the structure to reveal the people behind.

They are playing cards at the large outdoor table. Not everyone is playing, because Sho is sitting on the hand rest of her chair, softly tucks her hair behind the ear and playfully whispers something to her.

He looks at her beautiful face carefully. Her head thrown back as she laughs and gives Sho an elbow, clearly a result of whatever it is he says to her just before.

He wonders why it doesn’t pain him to see his first love taken away (and looks so happy) by someone else.

‘Satoru!’ Akira shouts excitedly. His glasses fall over his nose.

He can see Sho quickly jumps from his seat, almost loses his balance, away from her. Really, he chuckles softly and shakes his head as he quickens his steps to meet them.

‘Hey you shut in! You’re late!’ Takeru glances at him from his cards. ‘We can’t even have snacks because chibiko here insists we can’t start without you!’

His smile grows bigger.

‘I’m sorry, but..’ he can’t finish his sentence because Chisato has thrown herself at him, giving him a tight hug before quickly steps backward as if she were embarrassed of what just happened.

‘Welcome home,’ she smiles at him.

And he remembers again why he can only feel happy for her. It’s because he is happy that she is, and will ever be, his everything. Just as he is to her. Just as everyone is to her.
