Fate. A man crosses down the road and gets hit by truck. Is that fate? A person commits a crime, undergoes trial and is condemned to life. Can we call that fate? What is fate? Some of us believe it is destiny. Others would point out that it is the end, the inevitable. The cause beyond man’s control that is held to determine events. Whatever definition or belief you have regarding fate, one thing is certain: it is something that is out of our hands; something that we cannot control. The moment you wake up, from the moment that your day ends, Fate starts writing another line in your book of life. Every thought you have, everything you do is chronicled by Fate.
Simple isn’t it? We all wish that were the case. What some of us fail to realize is that Fate, like us, has it’s own sense of humor. A student studies until the wee hours of the morning for an exam but fails to take it since he wasn’t able to get up on time. A criminal is caught but due to lack of evidence, is set free to roam the streets. Man loves woman, but woman loves another man. These are just examples of Fate’s twisted sense of humor.
Most of us, if not all, would like to live a life without Fate. A life where we have full control of everything that we do. A life wherein we decide on our destiny. Unfortunately, that’s not necessarily the case. But that doesn’t mean we should just leave it all to Fate. One way or the other, we still have control of our lives but only up to a certain extent. And just like us, Fate can only direct our lives up to a certain point. Now how does this happen? When does this occur? Every time we decide, every time we make a decision, that is when Fate steps a side and lets us have the driver’s seat. Decision-making is like a junction. We can either go left, or we can go right. Each route has its own storyline, its own plot. It’s up to us though to decide. And once we make that choice, Fate comes back and starts writing again. All of us are victims of this cycle. It’s something we cannot escape from. It’s something that we have to live with. Something predestined. Fate.
I wrote this article when I was in my my early 20's. I honestly can't remember why I wrote it. I think I was pissed at that time. I just wanted to post it here so that in case I lose my printed copy, I have a way of getting it back. These are the times that I wish I could pull off something like this while writing at the office.
