I rushed my dog Layzie to the vet the other night. She’s the mom of my other dog who passed away last March, making her the oldest of the bunch. She’s 15 years old based on human age, making her around 85. Due to her age, she’s been having difficulties walking. It started to manifest last week. This week, she could barely get up. She kept on crying and no matter what I did (fed her, brought her in the house, gave her water), she still wouldn’t stop. Turns out there are a lot of reasons why. First, the vet told me she already has arthritis. It’s quite severe that given her age, she won’t be able to use her hind legs anymore, thereby eliminating her ability to walk. Second, she’s got scabies in her legs. It’s a severe case since she’s already developing wounds. And she also has problems with her eyesight too. So aside from giving me a prescription of meds, I was advised to have her lie down on a soft surface to help alleviate the pain in her legs. It’s tough for me to deal with this since she’s been with me since 1994. And now that her condition’s slowly deteriorating, I can’t help but think that it’s only a matter of time before she goes. I just lost my dog Shamrock last March. I don’t want to lose another one again. I know nothing lasts forever, but given the situation (and the losses I’ve had this year and late last year), I sure hope the people and pets that matter to us do. All I can do right now is to make things comfortable for Layzie as best I can. And pray that whatever is ailing her, she’ll be able to handle it.
