Largely, I got what I wanted in this episode. Largely. Klaus/Caroline is a thing.

yesterday is dead and over
tvd 4x17

-WHERE IS BONNIE? I WANT TO KNOW WTF IS UP WITH HER.

-Stefan and Elijah talked. Crack otp10thousandeva. Be noted. Yes. I will reblog this scene. I will read way too much into it. And I may write some phone sex.

-Elena calling the shots on when Rebekah should hurt Katherine. Elena tops Rebekah, much to the surprise of no one.

-Elijah/Elena. I loved that Elijah saw through her quickly. The ring just confirmed what he obviously suspected. And Elena's mocking of his words - and he was quick on his feet. That writer was gifted. That surprised Elena, who then let out some rage she's been forced to bury when she said she enjoyed watching the letter burn like Jeremy's body.

And I also love that Elena played him just as well. Her mocking 'duh' and desire to sharpen the blow re: Katherine unsettled him. The two of them do what they always are able to do: crack through each other and leave the other wanting.

The squishy part of me also liked how he said it'd be a shame for the world to lose her compassionate soul. Elena was not and is not his primary concern, but he cares for her and is worried about her. He was also deeply angry that Katherine was so callous - Elijah thinks Elena should mean something to her.

And, of course, Jeremy's death. His entire reaction to it. adliawdsaeaed

Which brings us to.

-Elijah/Katherine. And my feelings of otp. Cos, Katherine/Elijah is my favorite.

"What kind of man would I be if I gave up on finding Katerina?" Elijah is getting his groove back. He's very clear on the person he wants to be and is struggling to get back there. Elena got him there (no surprise, it was Elena that had him questioning himself in the first place) - but it was because of Katherine.

Fittingly, his last scene is going back to his home with his sister to be with their brother.

I didn't expect Katherine/Elijah to go where it did, but I really fucking love it. Because it's about identity. Elijah is reconstructing the person he wants to be. An older brother. And figuring out how to be that man that Katherine touched five hundred years ago that he'd lost during his years as a vampire again.

And Katherine. The cure is his freedom. I'm not sure if he gave him the actual cure. I'm pretty sure Elijah doesn't either. But she shook him. Maybe his words - that he didn't know her shook her as well. Or maybe she is just using his anger at her for using him and not being the person who she used to be against him to achieve her means.

It's perfect. If Elijah catches her, after all, the game is over.

But she still expects him to chase her again. Maybe this time he'll actually catch her. Maybe she'll let him.

-lol @ Bekah hating every girl Klaus and Elijah fall for. THE ONLY GIRL WHO SHOULD MATTER TO THEM IS HER. THEY SHOULD FIGHT FOR HER AFFECTION FOREVER. DUH.

-Elijah and Rebekah were fucking perfect. Elijah listens to what she's saying. And he challenges her - being human may not get her what she wants. And Rebekah is perfectly aware of it. Katherine didn't really unsettle her and neither did Damon. Rebekah knows the risk she is taking.

And she's decided that's what she wants. She's decided the life she wants on her own terms.

And Elijah's longing. Always and forever. And Rebekah gets that. But she's done defining her life around her brothers. It's brought her pain and left her stunted. But she also makes it clear that she will always love and value Elijah. But she's going to redefine what that means and her goals and dreams are not going to play second fiddle to them.

And Elijah is clearly not happy with it but he clearly respects where she's coming from.

GOD DAMN IT. I'M GOING TO WATCH THIS STUPID SPIN OFF.

-And, of course, Stefan and Rebekah's arcs mirroring each other in certain ways. Stefan, like Rebekah, is tired of reliving the same abusive life with his brother. Elijah and Elena's issues around identities and leading their respective families mirror each other. Elena is astray, as Elijah has been for awhile. And Elena, like Elijah, will eventually come back. But maybe she'll have a new perspective, like Elijah does.

Rebekah and Stefan have connected over Klaus and Stefan's abuse to them, have explored their mutual desire to get out of their current lives together. And, Rebekah and Stefan even had similar speeches to their older brothers. Rebekah wants her own life on her own terms. Stefan wants his own life on his own terms and made that clear to Stefan.

Of course, there are differences (which I'll get to in a moment wrt Stelena). Damon and Elijah are both clearly unhappy with Stefan and Rebekah's plans. But Elijah seems to respect Rebekah's point of view and I doubt he'll undermine it abusively. Damon put Stefan's feelings on the back burner and the second he got a chance, he was an asshole about it. His first response to Elena's ultimatum is to mock Stefan's plans. I fully believe Damon will get some chains on ebay for Stefan as well as Elena.

-Damon/Elena. Damon was pissed off at her and ranted at Stefan about locking her down. And Rebekah was like 'u want to control elena y/n' and Damon was like 'y' and Rebekah screwed him over and it brought me delight. I like to think his obsession to with controlling Elena bites him in the ass because everyone around him just uses that to play him without trying.

-Stefan's anger and pain at Damon 'not being on his side' was gross because Elena's mind and body is not Stefan's side. But I like that his reaction is basically to be done with Damon. It's the right instinct (DAMON MAY ALSO TIE HIM DOWN, WHICH PLEASES MY TWISTED SOUL). I'd give him a sticker, but he needs a punch in the nose.

-Stefan/Elena. Everything Stefan is doing to bring her back is about the fact that she pushed him back. About the fact that he owes her everything for not giving up on him and for letting her die. His love for her is a debt. And he's trying to pay it off. And in doing so, he's not actually loving her. He's not listening to her and his concern is profoundly selfish. He's centering it around what he thinks she needs instead of listening to what she has to say.

And Elena's response to all this is to kill. And tell them frankly she'll keep killing if they don't back down.

Which, yeah. Is fucking terrible. When she starts bringing in innocent people into the mess and slaughtering them - she needs to be stopped. But the cure isn't the answer. The answer is to help her decide to turn the switch back on. Yeah, the switch doesn't truly exist. Except for the part where it does with newbie vampires on some level. Which Elena is.

What Elena needs is to decide to turn it back on, break the sire bond if it's still an issue, and figure out who she wants to be. It's exactly where she was heading before her brother died. And that's going to be much harder than figuring out how to live as a vampire, figuring out how to life as a sister with a dead brother. Sister was the first word she used to define herself in 4x01 and finding a way to keep that while recovering from Jeremy's death or deciding to let it go is the journey she'll need to take in order to start to heal.

Coming back to Stefan and Elena - I doubt Elena is going to let him leave when she does turn her switch back on. Elena has lost too much. And Stefan laid out all his cards (not that she didn't know them) by telling her frankly he's going to pull her back because she did the same exact thing to him. He owes her. And if she decides to keep him in her life, she will cash that debt and the price is forever.

IT'S WHAT I WANT AND I'M GOING TO WRITE FOREVER.

I suspect the intent will give us a scene that will mirror 3x20 with Elena giving Stefan a similar speech about some guy she used to date giving him some horrible advice. BUT I WILL READ AGAINST THE TEXT FOREVER AND MAKE IT ABOUT HER TAKING OWNERSHIP. And, also, the secret shameful part of my soul, read it as is and have feeeeeeeeeels and hate myself a little. BECAUSE YES SOMETIMES I REALLY REALLY LOVE AUTHORIAL INTENT STELENA. IF THEY DID IT WELL.

-WHY DID WE GET STUPID KLAUS/CAROLINE WHEN WE COULD HAVE HAD CAROLINE RUNNING THE TOWN WITH BONNIE HELPING HER BETWEEN EATING POPCORN AS CAROLINE MADE THE WHOLE TOWN HER PROM MINIONS. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL.

But I did get Caroline giving no fucks about his pain while she played on her phone and being angry that he wouldn't let Tyler to come back.
