The Vampire Diaries

I um. Actually enjoyed it? In a sense that I hate everything this show chooses to be.

To start with, Stefan was perfectly in character. Rebekah threatens him and tells him what to be and he quickly submits to her. He's remaking himself into someone who doesn't love Elena - he's making himself Rebekah's (stop caring). He doesn't heed Damon's calls - because, no. He wouldn't. Stefan's the brother who can let the other rot. And his dickish 'you're welcome' after breaking Damon's neck (it's something of a thing for them. like high school dances).

And Rebekah and Stefan's are hilarious, pretending they didn't love each other. And, also, their insistence of no strings attached is doomed to fail. Because it's Rebekah and Stefan. And Rebekah and Stefan are devoted people who fall in hard and deep. Every single time. But they're both really going to tryyyyyyyyyyyyy.

A knife just betrayed them. Rebekah couldn't dagger Kol, Stefan threw a knife at Rebekah for talking crap about Elena.

The way Bonnie was filmed after she set the ground on fire reminded me that, yes, this show can be visually stunning. I refuse to put hopes into her character arc. But I do love me a ticking time bomb so I'm enjoying it.

I, ah, really wanted Jeremy and Elena to make out after Jeremy told her he wanted to kill her. I'M OKAY WITH THE PERSON THAT I AM. I love Elena's cold and calculated 'lets kill Kol's blood line'. Because it's Jeremy. And Elena's link to her humanity. And in order to keep that link, Elena will burn away the values she believes keeps her human. It wasn't like Rebekah in 4x03 - Elena isn't acting on sudden uncontrollable rage.

As for ship stuff. I'm glad we have no sexual abuse, which is what I was fearing. And it was nice that Matt pointed out frankly that the old Elena wouldn't have left Jeremy with Damon. Because, yes. Muddled as this sire crap is. Elena being bound to Damon's orders is canon and it's creepy.

I also really loved that Elena was not able to get through to Damon. It's not because of fact Stefan's stronger or Stefan and Elena's love is stronger. It's because it was Elena at her best. Elena used the fact that Stefan's default to the people he loves is that he owes them in order to stay alive. It was the same skills that she's used time and time again - with Elijah, Rebekah, Katherine and Klaus to name a few. But Elena cannot do that as well as she's not herself and she can't do it with Damon because everything with Damon is clouded. Elena cannot truly see him right now so she can't manipulate him.

As for the last Stefan/Elena scene. They almost got it right. Because Stefan telling Elena that he never asked her to feel guilty was perfectly cruelly Stefan. Because Stefan knows Elena as well as Elena knows Stefan. And Elena Gilbert would blame herself for Stefan being hurt - Elena Gilbert can't not feel guilty for falling in love with Damon, not with the history between them. Stefan gets that. Stefan's the one whose held her the most when Elena breaks down from guilt and self-hatred. And Stefan was able to talk Elena out of killing Rebekah pointing out how Elena would be drowned in guilt.

But it was not just Stefan simply trying to hurt Elena. Stefan is going to try as hard as he can to follow Rebekah's path. And Stefan is going to try really hard not to belong to Elena.

The problem was that Elena wasn't given her due. Elena didn't lash back. Elena didn't defend herself. And I'm not going to blame her - it's not her fault. The problem is the fact that the text is taking away her voice with. Basically. Everyone. And maybe that's the point - her sire bond totally takes away her agency. But I don't like this story.

I want story where Elena stabs Stefan in the chest when he mocks her feelings and her hopes. And then she tells him that her hope and love make her strong.

BUT I WILL MAKE MY OWN JOY. And Elena's telling Stefan to help her at least for Jeremy was her trying to mold Stefan into the person who loved her, the person that is hers. Because her Stefan jumped into a cage with Katherine to save Jeremy. And that's the Stefan she needed and that's the Stefan she wants, even if she doesn't want him anymore. I love the idea of the selfish and broken parts of Elena's love for Stefan is still around and it still pulls her and it still pulls at Stefan.

Because Stefan was clearly conflicted in that scene. Stefan is trying to put Elena aside, trying to put Damon aside. But that's much easier said than done for him. He ended up being able to save them both while still being able to claim it wasn't to help them and that he doesn't care. And Stefan really does not want to care. He got lucky. But when push comes to shove, Stefan will stop caring about Elena and Damon as much as Rebekah will stop caring about her siblings.

Also: Elijah mention! Which, actually, was fail in context. But it was nice that the text remembered he existed.

In conclusion, I could easily use the text to debunk everything I just said. Because this show is an incoherent mess.
