a burning question

I'm bad at this hiatus thing but I've been watching Avatar and the burning question I've had for years reappeared. All the airbenders we've seen in Aang's flashbacks were male. In fact every air nomad we've seen was an airbender.

My question: where were the girl air benders? We know they're canon. And were were the air nomads who couldn't bend? Do we have answers that I forgot? Did Mike or Bryan say something? Got any good theories? TELL
