It takes a little bit after the episode Richie becomes Gear (titled HAHAH GEAR). In this, Richie does go through a pretty big change. He's been doing the hero thing with Virgil, but now he can do it more. While in canon he's the side kick in a narrative sense, I don't really see Richie as a sidekick to Virgil in how the two of them relate and work together.
Anyway, this is a big change for him and all. He's seen what it all does to Virgil and expects similar things to happen to him. He wants to take a bit of a fresh start so he decides to come out as gay (as he is in comic and apparently that's the intent in the cartoon from word of god but I cannot actually confirm that). He doesn't expect it to go over completely smoothly but his dad has been trying with racism so he figures things will work themselves out.
He tells Virgil first, of course. Who takes it a no biggy thing, which is exactly what Richie needs. Then he tells his parents and his dad kicks him out. His mom looks like she'd try and talk some sense into him, but Richie doesn't give him a chance. So, he runs away. This time, he runs away to Virgil's, whose doing a project with the girls for science, so only his dad is there. Which suits Richie, because he doesn't feel up to talking to Virgil right away. He just wants to talk to a responsible adult who works with kids like him for a living who is basically a second dad to him.
So, the Hawkins take him in. He basically lives there anyway, so it's not a huge difference.
From there, the story goes on them doing normal stuff like fighting bad guys. But Richie and Virgil also fall in love (Virgil realizes he's bisexual) and Richie's dad tries to reach out to him, but Richie isn't ready. More than that, though, I want to explore racism. The episode about Racism Is Bad bothered me on many levels and I want to explore how Virgil feels as person of color in a very racist world. I want to have times when Richie Just Doesn't Get It but really has to be a good friend/boyfriend to Virgil.
I've talked more about Richie's POV here simply because I've only got the first section worked out. I'm still pondering how Virgil's POV will come up.
