Why does no one bank on the fact that YnY is ridiculously awkward in general social situations in fanfic? He's just fine interacting with people when it has to do with destiny, his past, or games but bring in anything else and he has no idea wtf to do. It's hilarious. And anime canon has birds pecking at his hair when he goes on dates ( Read more... )

LYKE, NO WAI! YAMI IS SO HAWT AND COOL AND LOOKS SO HAWT IN THAT LEATHER, HE'S OBVIOUSLY THE MOST POPULAR BOY IN SCHOOL AND THAT MAKES IT SO SWEET WHEN HE RESCUES HIS PRECIOUS HIKARI WHO'S JUST A NERD FROM THAT HORRIBLE BYTCH ANZU WHO WANTS TO STEAL YAMI AWAY FROM HIS HIKARI, HIS ONE TRUE LOVE!!!!!!!

And in other, not so hyperbolic news, I agree with you.

What's more: it's Yuugi who has a thing for leather. Atemu wore it in the beginning to look more threatening, but ah... he kinda thinks all the leather and jewelry is silly (he told Anzu Yuugi doesn't have much of a fashion sense on their date).

Which begs the question: what would his fashion sense be? I REALLY WANT SOMEONE TO WRITE ME A FIC WHERE MAI DRESSES HIM UP.

Well, according to Duelist volume 9, when Yuugi first puts on the chain...

YAMI: It's still too subtle if you ask me! I think you need some silver chains on your arms!
YUUGI: C'mon! That's not my style at all!

But yes, Mai would greatly enjoy dressing him up. And if I knew jack about fashion, I would write you that fic.

Well, he did buy those (or maybe his grampa or mom. Or maybe his dad wants his son to look like a punk, you can never tell with that family.) And he had that leather even before he solved the puzzle. My view of things is that it IS his style, but he was too shy to actually wear it in public. Which is too bad because I actually think all the jewelry and leather works for him. YEARS WASTED.

I think Atemu knows Yuugi likes wearing the stuff so he's pushing him not to be so shy about it. He might also think it'd be Anzu's thing.

I know nothing about fashion either. My headcanon is that Atemu is just fine wearing school uniforms.

I agree with you on that, as Yuugi often does have a diminished sense of himself, why would his fashion sense be different?

I'm pretty sure Atem thinks it'd be Anzu's thing, considering that in the same scene he tells Yuugi to "Show Anzu how cool you are!" So, yeah, I'm pretty sure he ships Anzu/Yuugi. Which would probably contribute to why his date with Anzu was so very awkward. Not that there weren't lots of other factors there already, of course.

Considering what he can do to those things, I'd think the uniforms were enough too.

I'm not sure why it would affect what he thinks is cool? There are things I think look cool but would be waaaaaaaaaay to shy to actually wear in public.

Which begs the question why he would say he didn't think Yuugi had much of a fashion sense? Unless maybe he liked them but got nervous and wondered if Anzu did? He's not really good at normal teenage things.

Y'know, manga-ka have done quite a bit making Japanese school uniforms interesting to look at.

Well, what I mean is that he would think that it was cool, but he'd also think that everyone else would think it was lame and besides he could never pull it off anyway, that sort of thing.

Yeah, he's not good at 'dating' and the like, that much is clear. I think it has more to do with his following line, about how Yuugi "tends to hide his true feelings, even today", so I think he sees the outfit that Yuugi dressed him up in as a way of hiding, as opposed to truly expressing himself.

It's the freedom of the medium, where things like physics need not apply. Just look at Yuugi's hair!

Which would still mean it was Yuugi's sense of style. Why else would he have had the clothes? I'm rereading the chapter now.

Apparently Yuugi was trying on lots of different things. I wonder if Yuugi has a whole stash of different types of clothing.

TAKAHASHI, WHY DID NOT SPEND MORE TIME DEVELOPING THIS PROFOUNDLY IMPORTANT PLOT POINT?

I don't believe I ever said it wasn't Yuugi's style. Really, I agree with what you're saying, so I don't know what I'm saying.

He probably has a whole bunch of clothes stashed away on account of how he always wears his uniform anyway. (Remembers the trip to the Museum back in the first 7 volumes and how Jounouchi told Yuugi not to wear his uniform on the weekend, with Yuugi not understanding why.)

BECAUSE THE EDITORS WOULDN'T LET HIM!

I think I'm confusing myself.

Oh yeah I remember that. I... actually have now made it my personal headcanon that Yuugi has tons of different kinds of clothes he stashes away but refused to wear any of them but his school uniform because he was too shy and thought everyone (especially Anzu) would think he looked stupid.

RIGHT NOW I WANT TO WRITE FANFIC ABOUT THIS. I FEEL IT'S ONE OF THE REASONS I WAS PUT ON THIS EART.

Point is, Yuugi needs to embrace the leather, something that we can all agree to.

I now like to imagine that one time he did try on one of those outfits, and when Anzu saw him she got this confused look on her face, and before she could tell him that she liked it, he ran off and changed back to his uniform, convinced that she hated it. THE THINGS I DO TO YUUGI IN MY HEADCANON!

THAT IS A VERY NOBLE PURPOSE TO BEING ON THIS EARTH!

IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT ANZU DID SAY SHE LIKED THE JEWELRY. SO I BELIEVE THAT YUUGI SHOULD EMBRACE THE PUNK LOOK COS ANZU GOES FOR IT.

Actually I have lots of obscure genfic ideas where little things were explored. Like how the hell did Isis know about motorcycles? And how did the Ishtar clan survive? Food doesn't last for three thousand years. Not even peanut butter. And Egypt didn't have peanut butter then.

Or maybe it was one thousand years. My translation is wonky on that.

ANZU KNOWS FASHION! WE KNOW THIS MUCH, POST SERIES YUUGI WILL WEAR WHAT HE KNOWS ANZU GOES FOR!

I like to imagine that as a woman, Isis was allowed to go to the surface when instructed, since it's not like she would ever be able to bear the responsibility of the Ishtar family (rolls eyes).

Actually that's what I plan to write. Ickle!Isis exploring the outside world as a kid.

Yeah, but I'm going cut some slack here. Egypt was better than a lot of cultures with sexism, but it wasn't that great. I completely buy that the responsibility would have to go through the men. Though, the women had some big responsibilities as well, keeping them all alive. And I'm assuming, somehow finding mates the keep the clan going.

True, Ancient Egypt was one of the few cultures where on paper (or should that be papyrus?) men and women were equal. Didn't generally work out that way in practice, but points for trying and all that. And yes, I'd definitely read about Ickle!Isis doing her thing, trying to keep a family that she knows is horribly dysfunctional together, because what else does she know?

a_white_rain May 29 2009, 03:29:08 UTC
That was more for the common folk, right? I imagine sexism would rear its head for more 'important' families. I mean, how many female Pharaohs were there, anyway?

A lot of the clan isn't explored, so I have some leg room. I'd like to think a few times women had to have had the scars on their back, cos sometimes a male just wasn't produced. And practicality would have won out.

Should I ever get around to writing it, I'm not sure how kind I'll be to Istar!Dad. He was a jerk. But really, par for the course in this series. I remember being shocked about reading that one father that was actually a good one in that American superhero mini arc (two chapters).
