martha

So I'm writing this fic where the Doctor, Jack and Martha have become the main characters (though I've decided to wait and see where the three episodes with Martha is going before doing too much. The thing is, Martha... is difficult for me to write. Most of the other characters have a clear voice and motives to me.

However, I love the idea for this fic, and Martha is integral to it. So here is what I'm going to do: under the cut will some interpretations+personal canon of Martha. It would be great if other Doctor Who fans could give me feedback on it. You don't have to be a fan, but I'd like you to be as objective as possible.

  • Although bright, Martha never really wanted to be a doctor. It was something her mother pushed on her. After her time, however, she found herself pushing herself to the limits on studying because she wanted to help as much as she could. And she feels both experience and knowledge are important.
  • Her attraction to the Doctor was mostly surface at first - he was hot with a time machine. However, it became deeper when it felt like he gave her something to believe in. She was never really bored with her life like Rose, but it always felt like something was missing. Although it was best for her to move on from the Doctor, she doesn't regret or think less of her feelings.
  • She believes strongly in the power of words. Before she met the Doctor, she'd be more likely to scoff at 'the pen is mightier than the sword', but now she knows better. She's always had trouble expressing what she felt (which is why her confessions to the Doctor were cliche - (I love him to bits), but I never thought they actually the text were showing they lacked depth), but after the year that never was, it's become so much easier for her.
  • Martha always had trouble sympathizing with people who made really bad choices. She knew the stats and never lacked compassion for them - but it wasn't until she decided to leave the Doctor that it really hit her how difficult relationships could actually be.
  • She's closer to her dad, but longs for her mother. They've made some steps towards becoming closer and understanding each other since the year that never was, but there is still a ways to go.
  • She considers Tish is her best friend.
  • She has a sit and wait approach to most things. She's fairly good at getting where she wants because she knows the value of patience and choosing her battles. Sometimes, though, it makes it hard for her to take risks. Her time with the Doctor helped her some with that, but she's still finding a balance. Sometimes she can be too impulsive.
  • She actually wouldn't want to sleep with Jack - he's too much like family to her now. She likes that he seems to have something with Ianto, because they both know what it's like to be in love with the Doctor. It's not an easy thing. She also thinks Gwen has a crush on Jack, but wants to steer clear of it all.
  • The main reason she prodded the Torchwood team some was to get a feel about how Jack was doing. She was so happy because Jack seemed happier. She's not fully aware of the extent of Jack's darkness and how she'll react to it depends on how she finds out.
  • She's very happy with the new bloke she met (I think it's Tom? Not 100% sure). She'll always have something for the Doctor, mostly because she doesn't want to give it up.
  • She's very conscious of how she appears. She takes careful care of her appearance because show knows how important how she appears and carries herself to the outside world is. She gets less careful and more inclined to be sillier and herself when she feels comfortable with someone. It's something her mom is getting used to.
  • She's glad her parents are back together. There was always a small part of her hoping they'd work things out since they split up when she was young.
  • She's still curious about Rose and has grown up enough to not be jealous anymore. She hopes the Doctor finds something like her again because she knows how terribly lonely he is and that was almost enough for her not to walk away.
  • She does want to protect the earth, but she's honestly more interested in seeing what's beyond humanity.
  • She has a fairly ambitious personality. Sometimes that gets her in trouble (like when she wanted to get the loot Shakespeare stuff) but she is always willing to back down when she realizes she's gone to far. Well, she has some trouble when it comes to her heart because she's such a logic-based person that she becomes a bit off balance when she feels strongly about something. Sometimes she doesn't really recognize herself around the Doctor. She's not entirely sure how much she likes that, even if it's one of the reasons she grew up so much. She knows that.

But's it's never easy when it feels like you've lost yourself. She's a bit afraid it could happen again and it won't be around someone like the Doctor who is a good person, overall, and did grow to care about her.
That was more than I thought. I'd go on, but my lunch break is almost over.

wouldn't have missed it for the world (w, personal canon, fandom: torchwood
