In-game, I always thought Rikku was one of the characters who were closer to Tidus (the others being Yuna and Wakka, of course!) and they kind of came off as co-conspirator types (maybe it was all that aside whispered "Did you figure out a way to save Yunie yet?" "No, you?" stuff) Rikku is cheerful, energetic, and generally optimistic, so Tidus always got along well with her and could easily relate. He could be himself around her and relax a lot more. Plus it helps that she's cute :|b
In camp, he felt bad that she was here for so long on her own, and has basically decided he won't ever be leaving her behind, they'll all go home together. He looks out for her, only tries not to let her know it, but isn't TOO too worried about things because she's obviously made good friends that've got her back! He pretty much trusts her camp friends automatically because Rikku's a good person and he trusts her judgement. She was a huge relief to him because his only real worry was that he'd poof back out of existence but then she told him he makes it back to Spira and lives with Yuna on their little backwater island and it was like oh thank god.
He thinks of her as a good friend :|b
