I recently finished reading Naomi by Junichiro Tanizaki. The novel is about a Japanese man named Joji an electrical engineer who takes a Japanese girl named Naomi into his care because he is enchanted by her Eurasian looks. The two of them move into a house together and he begins cultivating her in Western culture. However over the years Naomi becomes spoiled from his constant attention. The novel begins with Joji having control over Naomi in the end of the novel Naomi is the one with control over Joji. Throughout the novel he reminds me of a spineless insect. He allows her to have custom made clothes, catered food, and buys her a new house when their simply is no money and she never lifts a finger. She mocks him so severely in front of company that I found it embarrassing to read at times. And in the end he convinces himself that he is happy as long as his obsession with her is fulfilled.
