Character: Rei
Fandom: Breath of Fire III
Personality: Rei was once what you would consider a 'big brother' type. He was known to give whatever he can to help others, and didn't really hesitate in bringing people into his little family of misfits so long as there was enough to go around - and even if there wasn't, he'd be willing to gallantly steal from the rich and give to the poor. He was the voice of reason in his little household, as well as a protector and a valiant friend. However, Rei's kind heart and rather gentle demeanor were changed dramatically after an attack on his home caused him to be separated from his two little brothers. After he thought them dead, he turned to vengeance and attempted to avenge them by killing everyone who had a hand in their deaths. His thoughts were tainted with the need to claim vengeance on his fallen 'siblings', and as a result he became obsessive and lost in his own bloodlust. But he let this go after killing the head of the syndicate that took his family from him, though it was with a great amount of difficulty. He lapses back into his old self, albeit a darker, slightly jaded man now that so much blood has stained his hands. His one true question is to wonder why he and so many others like him have been born with powers.
On the positive side, though, Rei is a charming individual. His openness and honesty are refreshing in a world that's so set to depress you. He is, however, something of a womanizer though he manages to keep that under lock and key for the most part. His sense of humor, although cheery and uplifting, has been spiked with a morbid edge - though he keeps a smile and his catchphrase 'don't that just beat all?' to keep the spirits afloat. He's a self-proclaimed kid at heart that has trouble with doing what he's told.
Strengths: To list all of Rei's strengths would take a lifetime. He is a true and honest person {saved the villagers despite their dislike of him} a loyal friend {fought to avenge Ryu and Teepo when he thought they were dead, returned to Ryu after killing Mikba} and perhaps the one person who manages to keep the full weight of the world from crushing his spirits completely{aside from the seven years he spent in complete isolation - which did sour his cheerful episode somewhat}. He has the ability to transform into a powerful creature called a WereTiger, and has very powerful physical attacks and great agility.
Weaknesses: Rei's loyalty sometimes blinds him to the truth. After losing Ryu and Teepo, he went out of his mind with grief and declared revenge against anyone who had a hand in the supposed 'murder'. Although seeming perpetually sunny, it's tinged with dark humor and a rebellious teenaer streak he never really grew out of. He's in fact very obsessive and once asked a question or given a task, he seems incapable of letting it go {revenge on Ryu and Teepo, the question of why he has such power}. He cannot control the Weretiger inside him and attacks anything and anyone around him while transformed as such. His magic skills are quite powerful, however he doesn't have the endurance to use them for long.
He's got a soft-spot for families and orphans.

Rei grew up an orphan - never seeing any of his kind. He had little chance to discover who or what he was in a world that demanded he fight for survival. Accompanying the usual distress that such a thing would bring, Rei also was born with a terrifying power that allows him to transform into a massive creature known as a Were-Tiger. He really thought he needed nothing and no one, until one day, he attempted to rob a traveling merchant and his son. He figured that the boy would slow the man down, which probably would have been true if the child wasn't the merchandise. Instead of a hefty bag of gold, the Woren found himself looking into the bored gaze of a purple-haired child. Alone, abandoned - a kinsmen from a different clan. And so they were ever since.
Some time after that, Rei was out hunting in the Cedar Woods. It had been a lean year, with many of the farmer's livestock vanishing into the night, but the teen still had some hopes of scrounging up a stray deer or two. What he expected to find, at the very most, was a starving buck - what fate thrust upon him was a naked blue-haired child, surrounded by snarling currs. After disposing of the beasts, Rei turned to leave - thinking this none of his business... however, the boy's whimpers touched his heart, and so he took him back to his little tree-top home.
It didn't take long for Teepo to accept Ryu, mere moments actually, but soon the elder two had to go gather some things for their new friend. After picking up some things for him (stealing from a local house, actually) Rei explained their lifestyle. They did not harm anyone, they just took what they needed to survive. Shortly after this, the boys gave Ryu a tutorial on how to steal.
Unfortunately... Ryu's first victim was a well known woodsman named Bunyan. The man says he will be out for the day, and in their excitement, Rei and Teepo drag Ryu off to raid his foot storage. With an extra mouth to feed and times as hard as they are, they need it where ever they can find it... Once more, Rei's plan seems to fall a bit short, and the three are caught as the man returns home early.
Bunyan is seemingly one of the few people to know of Rei's secret power. After explaining to them what it means to earn a living, he sends Rei off to go kill the monster atop the mountain tat is making life so rough for the people below. The two young boys immediately set off to go locate their big brother, and because of this, Rei cannot transform into his Weretiger form and deal with the threat. Regardless, the three of them dispatch the Nue - witnessing the poor beast struggle to block the entrance to her den.
Out of morbid curiosity, they investigate. Rei is disgusted with Bunyan as he realizes the Nue was trying to provide for her cubs - long dead though they may be, and they were not informed of these intentions. They return to Bunyan, who chides the younger two for escaping and tells Rei that if he had not withheld that information then none of them would have had the heart to kill it. They leave, their victory bittersweet, and Bunyan's congratulations fall upon deaf ears.
Months pass and supplies become plentiful again.
One day, Teepo begins to beg Rei to venture into town. Rei, knowing that the boy has been bragging, is reluctant to - however he cannot really refuse as both Ryu and Teepo ask, and his own curiosity is piqued. They're hailed as heroes, for once welcomed with open arms, and with smiles they realize that this is what it feels to be a hero.

They finally arrive in the mayor's room. The ghosts that live in the house transform into a massive monster, and the trio attack and defeat it. They take the money and flee, and McNeil, shunned by the woman, vows revenge.
The trio returns to the village and attempt to return the money, but the villagers refuse it. Loki is no where to be found, and Bunyan arrives and casually tells the cow he brought with him that the boys should return home. However, as they follow this advice, they return to their home blazing in flames. Two assassins wait for them, and even with their combined strength, Ryu, Rei and Teepo fall.
Rei awakens in the moat around the house, entirely alone with his family no where to be scene. The fire is still burning, and with a snarl, he vows revenge.
Years pass.
Rei stalks those responsible for the destruction of his peaceful life now in his Weretiger form - a terrible form he cannot control. After an encounter with Ryu wounds him, Rei slinks off to his old home - where the two of them have a reunion. However, it becomes apparent that Rei's obsession runs deep, and he refuses to give up on his revenge. After telling Ryu this, he bounds off to continue on his quest.
He unleashes his fury upon the town of Syn City, home of the Crime Syndicate. He slaughters the town mercilessly, then rushes after the leader. Mikba manages to defeat him and reveals that he has powers of is own. Ryu and Garr join the fight, and as Mikba breaths his dying breaths, he reveals that Balio and Sunder are dead and have been for several years at the hands of Ryu.
Afterwards, Ryu and Garr explain their quest. Rei realizes that his hands are forever stained in this revenge, and decides to turn his questions to why people like them have such powers, and joins the party.
He meets up with Ryu's fellow friends and quests with them to get Ryu back in the Wyndian King's good graces, and chose to help the Plant.

Sample log entry (250 words minimum): Resting at an Inn just didn't seem right to Rei, so shortly after the others had drifted off, he had slipped out.
Perhaps it was the way that their hosts kept staring suspiciously at him. Not that he minded, of course, as he would be the first to admit that he didn't exactly fit the appearance of a quiet guest. Perhaps he'd been in the Weretiger form for too long - truly, the rough, animalistic side had managed to seep into his normal self - for even Ryu had noted the darker edge to his thoughts.
Not that it mattered.
The man frowned heavily, hands resting on the hilts of his knives as he wandered towards the edge of town. Sure enough, the beasts were waiting. They always were at last night.
Training would do him some good, get his mind off things and finally allow for some peace. He had never been much of a thinker, a failure at planning, yet now it was hard to turn his brain off. Ryu was alive - did that mean Teepo was too? Had Teepo fallen into the same trap that Ryu had? Was he off somewhere in the distance, stubbornly putting off a call for help?
That would be like him. The Woren smiled slightly at the image - Teepo, still a child in his minds eye, calmly staring at his group of rescuers with the smug confidence that said 'what took you so long? I was just about to walk out myself.' It was a comforting thought, one that he had pushed from his mind ever since he'd realized that there was no trace of either of his brothers left around their ruined house.
But he couldn't obsess.
"Don't that just beat all," Rei sighed, glancing down at the monster corpses around him, one clawed foot resting against the dented skull of a curr. His smile returned slightly, one hand reaching down to pull some Zenny from the fallen creature. "Breakfast is on me tomorrow."
Sample journal entry (Six sentence minimum): And just when I thought things were finally settling down... [A small sigh whistles past the palm pilot.] Doesn't this just beat all. Well, let's see. I guess first things should come first. To everyone listening in on this... thing, I'm Rei. Nice to meet you, I guess.
Being stuck here... Some of us have things to do and answers to find. People to find, people to watch, revenge to get - I'm sure you've got the picture here, so I'm not going to drag on too long.
But I'm just double-checking on that whole 'time not passing' thing. That's true, right? 'cause I know a kid here who'd have his heart broken if he thought he let anybody down.
