Just wanted to say that reading this post makes me love you just a little bit more. :)
And, let me tell you, I have a problem on my hands. My cousin recently told me that she is planning on voting for McCain. I find this odd on about 100 levels. First of all, she is poor. Self-admittedly poor. She filed for bankruptcy last year even. Secondly, she think McCain is the lesser of the 2 evils. Basically, she distrusts Obama more than McCain. I know she's exercising some prejudices which further infuriates me. She's convinced that Obama is a secret Muslim and that he's involved with terrorists. WTF? I can't get her to see reason on this point either. It's especially disconcerting because her best friend from childhood converted to Islam almost 10 years ago. She shouldn't have a prejudice against Muslims for that reason alone. Of course, there's also that pesky point about Obama not actually being Muslim that she's somehow ignoring. My mind is blown. I have no idea what I can tell this girl. I've told her all sorts of things about McCain and Palin and they just don't seem to matter. She HATES Obama and refuses to vote for him. I'm going to try to convince her to vote 3rd party instead, but I'm not sure that's going to work. What would you do if you were me? I feel like a deer in headlights over here...
I would do what you've done, I would try to find out where she got her information regarding Obama and discredit THAT (send her to factcheck.org if she's the type who would actually check into her sources)... If she's a reader I would send her this: http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/UploadedPDF/411750_updated_candidates_summary.pdf it discusses the tax impacts of the two candidates tax plans, and the fact that Obama's is going to be better for poor and middle income (those earning less than $250,000 for families or $200,000 for singles)...
Those are the things I'd start with, but they require her being willing to do some reading and research, and it sounds like she's pretty happy to believe the BS being handed to her by bad sources, so..
My cousin told me yesterday that she is reconsidering her vote. Hooray! I told her I was stoked to hear that she is at least rethinking period! She said that the more she looks into the facts, the more she finds herself agreeing with Obama. She admitted that she was trying to convince herself to NOT like Obama from the start, but that she may be changing her mind. I actually feel better now. I guess I care a little too much sometimes...
