Colton, however, did smile. Mocking or not, this was the sort of subject matter that didn't involve disgusting things like poison and/or illness and/or the procuring and stealing of cauldrons, many of which would be infested with Merlin-knew-what. So it was therefore decent conversation.

"There seems to be a sudden influx of Ministry-related galas lately; that is, people from my father's department are throwing parties. But it looks suspiciously like husband shopping for one of my sisters." His lip curled in mild disgust. "Which is rather disgusting on principle, arranging marriages like that, but it's a good political tactic, if you know what I mean."

He shrugged a bit; certainly he was not suggesting that if his father had possessed a wider circle of influence years ago, he would have been elected Minister of Magic, but it did seem to Colton that his father was trying to improve their family's social standing as a result of that. Too little, too late, perhaps, but who was he to criticise?

"And that's exactly why you haven't been invited over," he added with a grin, "unless you're interested in marrying one of my sisters, which I don't think you are."
