He went out to the star-gazing rock when he couldn't stand to be at home anymore. It had been alright for a few hours, meeting these nieces and nephews he didn't know he had and learning all the new changes in his siblings. It was unsettling, seeing how much would change in two years. Time wasn't supposed to move that quick.
But, like clockwork, after a while the house had got claustrophobic, the shouting started, and he had to get out of there. Wasn't like he could stay there anyway. There wasn't room, and his dad had made that pretty damn clear.
So he left. Went out to the star-gazing rock, lying in the snow in Mr. Murry's old overcoat. It was cold, but not so cold that he couldn't be outside for a while. And Calvin had not yet worked out whether he had an inside to go into, anyway.
The stars were clear and bright, perfect for picking out constellations but better when looked at in one confusing, jeweled mess of a thing.
