Mona's backstory is deeply disturbing. And as usual with Anne Rice, there's the question "is it supposed to be?" It looks like it is, but because we're supposed to condemn Mona, not HER GUARDIAN. This isn't Mona getting a fake ID and picking up clueless dudes in bars. (Super rare, but it happens, and usually girls who do this go for stoned-out rock stars and such.) It's not even some gross adult who knows how old she is but has sex with her anyway. It's her guardian. She could be 25 and it would still be wrong. That she's 15 makes it plain evil.
Then the way her "guardians" are acting -- sounds very much like sexual abusers really would/do act. Kind of like how LKH often writes realistic responses to rape, while insisting everything is love. I keep wondering what's going on here. Are we supposed to think it's as fucked up as it is? But Rowena is Anne Rice's Mary Sue, isn't she?
It feels like Rice is one of those people (like LKH or Ayn Rand) who has kept a prudish, authoritarian mindset, and so cannot separate fantasy from reality. If she has an outre sex dream or fantasy, she must excuse it by pretending it would be okay irl. If you're brought up to believe thoughtcrimes are real and sex is inherently filthy, and don't do some serious decompression about it, you either end up there or harassing people over shipping.
I do think Quinn's behavior re: Mona is unrealistic. He's been laid. A lot. He also has access to getting laid whenever he wants. A lot. The hormonal surge isn't going to be as strong for him -- he could still obviously fall for Mona and want to save her, but I think he'd be a little more rational about it. Wait, Quinn and "rational", what am I saying. Actually he seems to be acting like someone with really severe and unacknowledged Borderline Personality Disorder. Though he's super narcissistic and sociopathic too.
Off-topic: I'm never logging into my LJ account again, and I'm a little uncomfortable even using OpenID here. The new LJ terms of use include following all Russian law. Russia has a law against "homosexual propaganda", and God knows what other kinds of anti-free speech bollocks. Now, I'm not afraid the Kremlin's gonna break down my door, or that they're going to do anything at all to American users. Though I do think there's a real possibility LJ will start deleting posts to avoid Russian legal repercussions, which are the kind of legal repercussions you really don't want. Is there any chance you could port your stuff to Dreamwidth, like LKH Lashouts did?
