I'm really, totally, officially 21.

Tonight, Renee threw me a "surprise" birthday pot-luck at her place (a "surprise" because my dubious schedule prevented it from being an all out surprise, teehee :-P).  It was fun to hang out with everyone, eat three times my weight in cake, and even play Mafia. :-P I feel so warm and fortunate having people to celebrate my birthday with me here. :-)

Then we made our way to the Dux.  I wasn't sure quite how this would end up working out, because it was a real blend of people-- Ilam friends, tramping friends, UniQ friends, class friends.  But of course, everyone was awesome, and so I got to officially christen my 21st tonight with some of my favorite people.

The main reason I wanted to go to the Dux was... well, I mean, it's an easy place for people to meet.  But yeah, the most important reason was that I called ahead and they assured me that they could make a beer milkshake.  Since reading the sequel to Cannery Row, Sweet Thursday, when I was about fifteen, a beer milkshake has been about the only alcoholic beverage I've had a genuine interest in consuming.  I've always wanted it to be the first drink I consumed legally, and so it was (even if I did it in a country where it didn't matter :-P).  And though I did it for different reasons than Doc, I sipped on the gingery froth and felt pensieve and content.

The party didn't slow down 'till dawn. The crew of a San Pedro tuna boat showed up about One, and was routed. The police came by at Two, and stayed to join the party. Mack took their squad car to go get more wine. A woman called the police to complain about the noise, and couldn't get anybody. The crew of the tuna boat came back about Three, and was welcomed with open arms. The police reported their own car stolen, and found it later, on the beach. Things were finally back to normal, on Cannery Row. Once more, the world was spinning in greased grooves.
