Finally I am able to understand the word my grandmother always shouted right before she smacked us! "Schiaffo" from "schiaffare"--to slap. Duh! For some reason, all the translators I put it into never came up with that.
For the record, "schiaffo" is an annoying word, and not just because of the things I associate with it. Say it. skyee off o. That's how my grandmother says it--or maybe she skirts over the soft sound to make it hard. Ugly word, anyway. My brother and I say it to each other when the other does something stupid. Complete with the hand motions!
