At work there is a Creole woman named Marie. She knows only very basic English (e.g. hello, please, thank you, and some McDonald's English, as we say) but speaks fluent French Creole and Spanish. I know enough French to have conversations and communicate with her, but I am reluctant to do so because I don't know which pronoun to use with her. Generally, it would go without saying that I would refer to her in the formal, but I seem to recall my French teacher saying in some places where Creole is spoken, the formal is not used/doesn't really exist (sort of as an equalizer).
But I don't want to just assume that and end up insulting her by using the "tu" form. Does anyone on my f-list know enough about French Creole to tell me anything about this?
