Yes, it's always the appropriate type of crying, which I think is what makes it feel that much more real because it's something you connect with. You've been there before, you've seen it. It's just feels natural (at least, now it does. It's a lot stronger now than it was before, in my opinion). He seems to be able to recall how people cry in certain situations and made it a part of Merlin's own psyche. That's why I'm always gutting myself with an imaginary knife every time I see him tear up because I know he could be a few words away from full on sobbing at any moment like in 4x06 when he can't even look at Arthur after he's convinced Gaius is a traitor. He takes you through the mental and physical build-up of that type of reaction in a sort of out of body experience. It gets hard to watch sometimes because it hits really close to the viewer in its delivery (especially with Merlin because you know what he goes through on the daily basis, and when the man can't even get a proper moment to cry about his father, it just hurts - both for you and him). And it's not just Merlin he can pull that type of emotional baggage with. I'm thinking of that Prince Hal reading and it's this slow intensity that kind of knocks you off your feet if you're watching it at the wrong time because it's so emotional. I don't even have a backstory for that character like I do Merlin, but I still want to hug him afterwards. That's pretty damn impressive.
I haven't! There's a lot I've missed as I was avoiding spoilers since April, but I definitely need to go back and watch everything. That sounds a lot like the behind-the-scenes video for Lady of the Lake when he's staring off into the distance, and then as soon as the cameras roll, he's cradling Laura - tears and all. How does he do that? That's some sorcery if I've ever seen it.
(Study Colin's acting? Who does that? Certainly not me! I don't know what you're talking about >__>
"...when the man can't even get a proper moment to cry about his father, it just hurts - both for you and him..."
These may still be the most gut-wrenching moments of all four series for me. That scene when Merlin is almost beside himself with very fresh, overwhelming grief, but because he is in a hall full of people, including Arthur, he has to try to master himself... and he almost can't any more...and then Gaius looks in his direction...and GAH! It's so terrible and wonderful to watch what Colin does with all that---the way his face twists and crumples and he tries to cover his mouth with his hand. All that raw misery and total vulnerability. And Colin doesn't care how really awful his face looks. He's not even going for beautiful crying. And that's part of what makes it even more affecting and gorgeous. And he does it all in the space of a few seconds. Truly astounding .( And him just a week shy of 26 years old?! It really does seem like sorcery.)
(I was talking about studying just his crying, which always makes me feel a bit sadistic. But yeah---I would pay good money for a master class to study Colin Morgan brushing his teeth when it comes right down to it. It's all gold.)

...I'd take a whole class if I could.)
