Reviews/recaps of iZombie episode 6 'Virtual Reality Bites' (SPOILERS). Click on article name for full story. IGN: The flirty interaction between Liv and Lowell is so on point, and it went to the next level when Liv tracked him down and kissed him. That felt like a real turning point for her. [snip...] Introducing Lowell gives Liv a chance to move outside her comfort zone.
Online Gaming World We've only recently met Lowell, but he's been given enough charm and backstory to be anything but a flimsy Major stand-in. He's someone Liv can relate to (her phone call to him and the anti-anxiety meds? Cutest!) and he seems to be her equal. Plus, Liv finally took the time to ask Lowell how he became a zombie. [snip...] The flirty interaction between Liv and Lowell is so on point, and it went to the next level when Liv tracked him down and kissed him.
TV Fanatic: The best part of that particular side plot had to be Liv's call to Lowell. [snip...] Lowell is seriously growing on me, and I know I'm not alone there. His easy openness about all his zombie details still throws up warning signs for sure, but on the other hand, he also let himself be very vulnerable with Liv. Confessing about being unable to play live music anymore, and how unfair that is? My heart! We speculated on the iZombie Round Table that Lowell could be one of Blaine's operatives, but opinions varied. I guess time will tell on that one!
Entertainment Weekly: An attack of agoraphobia sabotaged her first date with Lowell; [snip...] So instead, Lowell came to her, and made a night of sitting with her [snip...]. “You’re … the girl who had this freakish thing happen to her and you’re discussing it with probably the one guy who would understand,” said Lowell. Liv fell for that hard… but pulled away when Lowell moved in for a smooch. That was too much intimacy, too much hospitality for Liv. [snip...] Liv planted a kiss on Lowell, and the smile on her face said: It was worth it. And with that, the love triangle with Major is on. Lowell’s too good to be true. He must be lying about something. Why do I suspect he’s a vampire? Because it would be a nice twist. [snip...] We learned Lowell’s zombie origin story. Kinda.[Spoiler (click to open)]He was at a mate’s bachelor party. He passed out. Woke up with a monster scratch and a hankering for brains. Quite similar to Liv’s zombie spawn. The rocker gets his brain food from a funeral home. He can’t play live anymore because the adrenaline rush causes him to rage. He’s basically a studio musician now. So sad
TV Overmind: Liv’s interactions with both Major and Lowell crackle with intensity, and “Virtual Reality Bites” does a nice job at giving both men more depth, so that when Liv kisses Lowell at the end of the episode it truly feels like a big moment instead of simply our main character choosing between two cardboard cutouts. But Liv’s developing connection with Lowell isn’t taken too seriously; the two of them have a nice, easygoing rapport, and their chemistry is certainly charming. [snip...]
Liv’s newfound fear of leaving her apartment nicely parallels her trepidation about entering into anything too serious with Lowell; [snip...] Liv is worried about the uncertainty of what could happen between her and Lowell. With Major, everything was so predictable, but this new romance is a chance for Liv to take a risk and fully embrace the possibility of life [snip...] Liv getting together with Lowell is yet another step forward in her journey to reclaim her life, [snip...]
For the record, I’m all aboard the Liv and Lowell ship. In fact, I very well may be the captain of it. [snip...] It helps that Lowell is a surprisingly well-defined character after only two episodes; even if he doesn’t end up sticking around for long, it’s still nice to have him.
Comic Book.com In last week's episode, a sexy new zombie named Lowell (Bradley James) showed up that had Liv's undead heart going pitter-patter. He asked her on a date and in tonight's episode we'll see how uncomfortable that goes [snip...]
a) does not kill people for brains and b) was also scratched to become a zombie,
two things he could be lying about but I’m really hoping he’s not. He’s so attractive and British and perfect I assume he’s going to be evil, but I really don’t want him to be.AV Club: The biggest thing about the episode, though, might be that it added a personal story for Liv that works and seems like it could actually go somewhere. [snip...]
SciFi Pulse Lowell makes an appearance, but I’m still thinking he’s a horrible liar about one aspect of his undead life. Belated Episode 5 reviews ('Flight of the Living Dead'). TV Fanatic (Episode 5): Round Table discussion. AfterBuzz TV (Episode 5): You Tube video podcast. TV Over Mind (Episode 5): How does Lowell go through everyday life? Can he be trusted, or is that British covering up his lies? I don’t know just yet, and I’m excited to find out as we find out more about his experiences as a zombie. “Flight of the Living Dead” is an excellent episode, an hour that illustrates what’s already so darn enjoyable about this series, while also showing off some newer, potentially even stronger elements as well. It kind of shocks me, because I’m not usually a fan of the “mysterious guy” character type, but I actually really, really like Lowell. His whole speech to Liv about how she gave him hope again was sweet, funny, and charming and nicely verbalized what they each represent to the other.
