[IC Information]
Character Name: Arthur
Series: Inception (movie 2010)
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Species: Human
Appearance: Arthur is tall and thin. His limbs are long, but not so long to make him look gangly or awkward. His face is angular and sharp, with dark brown eyes. He is able to exert both extreme control and frightening expression at times. He is always clean shaven. His hair is black and ridiculously tightly curled, but he has it slicked back away from his face constantly by hair product. Outside of the comfort of his own apartment he is never seen in anything less than a button down shirt and slacks. Most of the time, he is in a tie and waistcoat as well. Everything about Arthur is impeccable.
Personality:
Arthur is efficient in every sense of the word. He seems cold and stiff as a board upon initial acquaintance, but in actuality he is simply in control of his deep running emotions. Arthur is a planner. He’s the competence behind a great idea. He could very easily have become a doctor, lawyer, or any other sort of normal career worker and excelled at it. Instead, he chose to stick to the dreamsharing business because he loves it. He doesn’t do it for the money. He does it for the challenge and the thrill because there is nothing else quite like it.
On a whole, Arthur likes information. He likes to know every detail about everything that’s happening around him from the weather to the number of bullets left in the gun hidden under his desk. Most would put his behavior down to control freak or OCD tendencies, but really it has more to do with insatiable curiosity and his desire to be able to do anything he wants with his life. Arthur is not a control freak because change, even sudden change doesn’t bother him one bit. He can and will adapt to make the most of a rotten situation with the information he had gathered.
Arthur has an extremely thorough, fixed, and logical view of himself and the world. It gives him the ability to plan and hack and do math. He can spell and correct grammar and follow rules in any format, but he is not very good at things that require intuition. He can cook passably enough to care for himself, but he’ll never make anyone moan over his meals. He can trace and draw or copy geometry by math, but he has no hand for actually designing. It doesn’t bother him that he’s not artistic in the least, because he knows what he is good at. What does bother him are situations where a certain intuition into human feelings, or motivations is required and he can only supply the logical answer. He knows his own thoughts and feelings to the minutest detail, but he does not have the true skill for feeling out other people beyond cursory skills he has picked up from watching Eames and Cobb.
History:
Arthur is from the movie Inception, which does not supply a lot of background on him at all. He isn’t even given a last name.
In the movie he is the point man for the inception team, as well as an initial extraction job at the beginning of the movie. It’s plain that he has been a point man (a position that essentially means he goes ahead of the team and gathers all of the information that they will need to do their jobs as well as additional info during the job itself) for quite a while.
During the movie he hosts the second level of the dream stable minded, controlled, and reliable enough to time the kick out of the dream with both the third and first levels. At the end of the film he is merely seen exiting the airport and waiting for a taxi.
With mod’s permission I would like to apply my own vague headcanon to his past since he is not from an ongoing series in which more might become available.
Headcanon: Implied but never stated fully in the movie by both Arthur’s actions and the things he can do is that he used to be a part of the dreamshare military program before its disbandment. Based on this the headcanon, and Arthur’s fascination with the dreamsharing, I have developed starts with Arthur born in a family that was not precisely working on entirely legal pursuits all of the time.
With his straight nature he was at a constant clash and learned to control himself in his high school years. To escape going into the same sort of work as his family, he enrolled in a military college and was pulled out of it early by special request because his scores got him a recommendation to the Dreamshare program. Despite the unethical applications and questionable testing before the program was shut down Arthur was in love with the whole process. When the program disbanded he attempted to go into normal military life and failed miserably. So…finally having an adequate reason Arthur gets out of service at the end of his rotation then steals some of the dreamshare equipment and gets into the rather lucrative (and highly illegal) business of extracting.
Supernatural Abilities: N/A
Supernatural Weaknesses: N/A
Natural Abilities: Arthur, though he looks slight under his suits, is actually at peak physical fitness. He can run for long distances with heavy firearms. He has excellent hand combat skills, and is far stronger than he actually appears to be. He kept strictly to his military workout schedules after his retirement even going so far as to adjust them to continue to help his endurance and strength. Not a bit of it from his excellent marksman ship to his ability to kill men in zero gravity if necessary come from supernatural abilities. Arthur works his ass off to maintain his physical skills.
Possessions:
A loaded red and white die that only Arthur knows the weight and number of.
A loaded Glock 17
An extra mag of bullets
A small notebook
And in hand a bag the size of an airline carry-on
First-person POV journal sample:
{The first thing he does once his head clears is reach into his pocket and draw out his die clenching it firmly in his hand. The second thing is does is turn and look for anyone else from the team. Instead he sees what looks like…}
Chicago…?
{He frowns.}
We got off the plane in L.A.
{He digs in his pocket for his phone to find it dead. Immediately, he rips the sim card out and discards the actually phone.}
Useless bloody--
{Now he knows he’s spent too much time around his team if he’s cursing like Eames. His hand drifts to his back under his suit and then stops coming back to the front.}
It would alert the projections if I am dreaming, but….
{He clenches his totem.}
I don’t think I am.
Third-person POV rp sample:
Arhtur checked his watch one last time as the taxi pulled up in front of him. He had precisely fourty-eight hours to waste until he would be back at the airport and back on his way to Paris for the debriefing and the payout from Saito. He was confident the Japanese man would not skip out otherwise he never would have let it been scheduled so long after the job. They had completely it after all, even with all of those setbacks.
He grimaced slightly as he slid into the cab and gave clipped concise directions to his hotel. He hoped it looked nothing like the hall he had designed and ended up fighting in with no gravity. It had been a nightmare trying to move the charges and generate the proper kick, but he was rather proud of himself for being able to engineer it with no gravity. He allows a small smirk to grace his face and he basks in the feeling of an impossible job done well for the few moments of the drive.
It isn’t long before the cab is pulling away from the curb and he’s turning down offers for help with his luggage as he enters the hotel. The revolving door blurs ahead of him and his head fuzzes over in a way that it hasn’t since he first reacted to the unrefined forms of somacin over half a decade ago. He fights and masters the urge to drop his carry-on bag, but he does compromise and makes his way back outside.
He squeezes his eyes shut for simply a moment to quell the tingling of his limbs and pries them open hoping that this isn’t something the rest of his team is going through. Feeling a worry build in his chest What if they were following Cobb to home to his kids Arthur turns to summon another cab only to find he isn’t in L.A. anymore at all.
If he didn’t know better, he’d say he was in Chicago.
