Just a quick update.
I've been going to Barnes and Noble about one afternoon a week and just sitting and reading rather than staying at home and not doing much of anything, so I thought I'd make a quick post about the books I've read...
The Effects of Light
This was on the shelf of books recommended by employees. The person who had recommended it had also recommended one of my favourite books (The Time Traveller's Wife) so I figured she might have similar taste in fiction to mine and that a suggestion from her would be worth checking out. This book was a little pretentious in places, but overall I really enjoyed it.
Girls In Peril
This was a "coming of age" book about five girls. It was told from a weird perspective so you couldn't really get emotionally attached to any of the characters, plus some of the story lines were a little far-fetched. Not great.
A Child Called It
I'd heard of this book before and Jen's mom recommended it to me, so I thought I'd check it out. Being a memoir, I found it quite disturbing. The author's will to survive his early childhood is remarkable. I started reading the second of Pelzer's three books The Lost Boy, because I was interested in seeing what happened to him after he was taken out of his mother's custody, but only read the first few chapters. Not the best writing, and as I said earlier, disturbing, but probably still worth the read.
Running With Scissors
Another disturbing memoir. The author had a very light perspective, you can tell he has a good sense of humour, but knowing that the story he was telling was true, a lot of it wasn't something I could laugh at.
The Girls
Okay, so I haven't read this one yet, but I plan on reading it this afternoon. It's a fictional autobiography (fictional autobiographies?) of conjoined twins. I think I've had enough of disturbing non-fiction memoirs for a while, time for something a little different.
