Countries around the world have always used the Olympics as a status symbol to say to the rest, we are modern and stable and powerful enough to host the most international event and show the rest of you that everything is hunky dory here in [insert country helmed by dictator and/or guilty of multiple human rights violations/crimes against humanity here] and this is nothing new. It is absolutely the perfect time to protest Chinese occupation of Tibet because everything is not ok. Someone needs to knock that torch into the snowy slush of Everest in the name of freedom. Fuck the olympics and fuck Mary Lou Retton too. Fuck her in the mouth with a soggy torch.
