Aran Islands...Inis Mor

Sep 20, 2008 20:51

What a beautiful day. We went to the Aran Islands, specifically, the biggest one, Inis Mor. It was sunny and warm; basically the day was made of awesome. Except for getting there and back. A bus, then a ferry, and the bus part was late in the morning, ditto at night, with accompanying bad traffic.

But the day itself was great. I got to see a 3000+ year old ring fort, Dun Aonghasa. Basically several horseshoes of stone, set against a cliff, so that there is no wall at the cliff, just a huge dropoff. Amazing. I was so awed. I had lunch sitting on the rocky ground inside it, I figured it was the perfect setting for my sandwich.

We also saw most of the island via a bus tour, including the seal colony, etc. At one point, we found all these abandoned old stone houses, or what was left of them, clustered together in deep grass.

I'm tired, but so, so worth it.
