“Do you mind?” he asks, holding up the camera. Permission is given with a head nod and the flash goes off. “Thank you. …Would you like to see?” Instantly there are five pairs of eyes vying for space over his shoulders. They are wildly excited by the image on his tiny illuminated digital display and within minutes the rooftop is standing room only.
Taiki wonders if anyone will notice the bare hotel-front -- though the city that never sleeps is surprisingly peaceful at nearly three on a Monday morning. An obvious and mass relocation -no matter how temporary or minute the shift- is not normally something he would encourage, but they are enthusiastic and the energy feels good.
And so the rest of the chilly morning is spent on the roof of Bedford Hotel, entertaining grotesques with photographs. One by one the figures disappear when the sky lightens and by six a.m. Taiki is panning through the images alone. Another cup of coffee from the thermos and he watches the Sun weave up between a gray office building and an old brick apartment rise. An eagle gargoyle stretches out just behind his head.
