Taiki spends his 26th birthday 8km South of Costa Careyes. On the very edge of a cliff sits an
enormous cement bowl -- an abstract sculpture commissioned by a wealthy eccentric. The locals despise it and tourists generally have more interesting entertainment priorities, meaning Taiki usually has La Cupa del Sol to himself.
A car drops him off at the sculpture and he plans to walk back. A circuit is cut around the edge of La Cupa -- Taiki stares down at the breaking waves, toes a dozen centimeters from the edge. The rhythmic crash is hypnotizing. Eventually he climbs in through the ground-level opening. The Sun peeks over the horizon and he lays out a blanket on the bottom of the bowl. Stretching out on an incline, he stares up at the sky and loses himself.
It's perfection. The unique sculpture offers complete isolation while reducing the sounds of the ocean to a thundering white noise.
He stays just until the Sun peeks over the rim of La Cupa. Rolling down the sleeves to his light shirt, Taiki climbs to his feet and repacks his bag -- a sunburn is guaranteed if he stays outdoors during the day. With one last look around, Taiki wanders towards the nearby village. There's a small holy shrine that he's been meaning to visit...
Costa Careyes never disappoints.
