Thursday: Sports
I have never been particularly interested in sports...I got through them in high school without much incident, but other than that I have always been more of a “book person”. My family competed in bowling tournaments when I was about 9 and we placed first...but that is the extent of my athletic career (if you do indeed consider bowling a sport).
But Shuichi plays for a team based out of Tokyo in soccer! He has even competed for Team Japan several times! I try to watch all of his games, though I confess that I really do not understand much about the sport. I just watch the people move up and down the field and try to pay attention to what is happening to him so that when he calls later that night I can at least participate in the conversation. But he is really very good! He has been working very hard his entire life and because of his dedication he has made his way up through the J-League ranks. Just the other night he scored the only goal against Brazil. I was listening to it from a radio while stuck in an elevator...
I don’t mind attending sporting events once in a while, but they are a little taxing so I do not frequent them. Though, if I can manage it, box seats help with that quite a bit. Sometimes Shuichi is able to get me one for his matches...and we have gone to two baseball games over the years. He enjoys them, so it is all the better for me.
But that is really the extent of my sports interest; watching a few soccer games, attention centered around one person.
