Last night Mike, Sam, Foster and I went walking at L'il Mulberry park. As we started our first trek around I noticed something making it's way from the field towards the pond. I pointed it out and said "What the Hell is that!!!??? That's a freakin' RAT!!! As we rounded the trail by the pond, we noticed it swimming across the pond. It would dive periodically and then resurface a little further along it's course. We watched it till it came to the edge closest to us and then swam alongside as we walked. then it made its way to it's den and off we went to the next bunch of animals. With me scratching my head, I wondered aloud if it was a
MuskRat. I had heard of them when I was a kid and seen evidence of them in the creek behind our house and at the " 7 ponds" we used to fish at. but I had never seen one... Until last night. Well actually we had seen it a couple of weeks ago when we thought we had seen an Otter. It wasn't it was this MuskRat. (Well not this exact one... this one is from the web)... and it was doing the same thing - carrying grass to make it's lodge / Den. Notice the nasty Rat tail. That's what we saw.
Then as we made it to the dock... Apparantly the 2 duck mama's had a fight and one took off and left it's 5 babies to fend for themselves. I was sooooo worried about them. After a while of wrangling them away from the muskrat's area we continued. Then we made it the 3rd turn where we saw 3 young rabbits and 1 baby bunny chasing each other around an outcrop of bushes / trees. That was pretty cute to see. We watered the dogs and made the 4th turn and met up with Jenny who had just driven up to join us walking.
The second loop we saw the baby ducklings and they were still alone. and they were swimming very close to a snake that was waiting on them to get a little closer. So I chased them away from it and then threw a rock at the snake. it took off and then we continued on.
Pretty exciting huh?
Oh yeah... Reminds of Mutual of Omaha's Dacula's Wild Kingdom.
