i thought you were required to have a data plan to get service for the iphone at all from at+t. how did you pull it off w/o a data plan?

i'm asking because I am shopping for phones

Here's the skinny... I bought the phone from Goss's boyfriend. I then contacted a nice guy on craigslist to jailbreak and unlock the phone. I then put my sim card from tmobile into the phone and BAM!!! I was up and running.

I use wifi to do all things data-like. The data plan is for doing web stuff over the phone lines (airtime) without using minutes. If you can buy a phone from an individual then you should be ok. Otherwise if you buy it from apple or att you are required to get a dataplan. If ATT finds out or figures out you are using an Iphone without a dataplan (on ATT) it will put you on it and you are stuck.

So if you do an Iphone do it on tmobile... much cheaper.

I personally don't need to surf all the time. I can wait till I get to a wifi area and they are pretty much everywhere.

Apple says iPhone jailbreaking violates our copyright ext_8055 February 18 2009, 18:09:56 UTC
I assume you know that Apple says you can't jailbreak an iPhone without breaking the law. EFF of course says that jailbreaking your iPhone is protected under fair-use doctrines, and that the Copyright Office should grant an exemption because "the culture of tinkering (or hacking, if you prefer) is an important part of our innovation economy."

Should be interesting.

If they gave me what I wanted instead of what they need to rip me off..**cough** cable company **cough** then I wouldn't feel the need to go around the system. I don't want the data plan. I think it's a waste of my money. If I could use ATT without the data plan, it may be worth it to me to switch. But at this point. No thanks.
