Basically, it is the thing where expressing the slightest bit of interest in their problems, no matter how fake, dooms you forever to be talked at by some random drunk.

The weird thing is, aside from the fact he's wearing what appear to be very worn dress slacks and not jeans, his outfit and Query's are very similar. His tattoos are also largely on display from under and around the wifebeater as he spots the girl and moves in to take the seat beside her.
"Give me a glass and leave a bottle of Jameson's for me and the girl."

"Hello, sailor," she toasts him with what's left in her glass and downs it. She isn't shy about looking at his tattoos, but demonstrates a loose grasp of socialization by looking Spider in the eye when she talks. "Whatcha do that for?"

"Societal cliches suggest buying a girl a drink is a good ice-breaker. I figure, the more drinks I'm covering, the better my luck."
Big brown puppy dog eyes do him so little good.

He sees the pretty guy. Yes. He is ignoring the pretty guy, in hopes that it will catch on as a trend and he can hold Query's attention.

Her good-natured grin indicates this is an acceptable practice, however.
