Mistakes have been made

Walter makes his way from the train station to Daniel Drieberg's apartment for what, he assumes, will be the last time. His feet drag a bit on the stairs when he reaches the building and he's embarrassed at himself for trying to delay what's coming. He's made mistakes. Terrible, irredeemable mistakes. For that, losing a friend, his home, and his job are only small prices to pay, compared with what could be. These are things which must be done, though. One hand idly strokes the soft edge of a feather buried deep in his coat pocket as the other knocks at Daniel's door.

The truth of it is, he feels like a coward. Not for feeling nervous and uneasy on his friend's doorstep, but because he had intended to only send a note. Because he had intended to leave without saying goodbye. Daniel wants to speak with him though, so Walter finds himself standing in the hallway and waiting for the last, uncomfortable words he'll share with the Nite Owl.
