Eddie looks forward to his visits, from his doctor and his friends, both. It improves his mood for the day. He's not any less cooperative when he knows there's a visit coming, but he's certainly happier and more talkative. Getting him to be talkative again after the incident with Crane has been an ongoing process. Sometimes he's chatty and like ( Read more... )

So, now Eddie's back at the hospital. Great. Seeing as how he has no control over anything in this situation, and how he knows very well that it's in his best interest to go along with whatever tests need to be done (well, he's allowed to freak out when they're actually being done, but freaking out is entirely different from being poorly behaved!) he makes his highest priority trying to get someone to find a way that he doesn't have to be handcuffed to the bed. That should be illegal. Apparently people can bring him juice, but they can't make that happen.

The difficulties with words come and go, and overall, he's much more hesitant to speak, because he can't predict it, and that makes him look very stupid. It's not a good time, here.

Well, the good news is, all those tests have served a purpose. They've figured out what's wrong. The bad news...

Well, Luke'll have to break that to him.

Knock, knock, on the door frame to let Eddie know he's there, then he strides right in, file tucked underneath his arm. "How've you been holding up?"

Eddie looks up at him and smiles, and immediately rattles the cuff. Seriously, he's not going anywhere. Make it go away, for the love of Pete.

He decides to not talk, and shrugs instead. He'll pretend it just looks like there's really nothing to say. It is pretty obvious how he's holding up. He's here, but he smiled.

He really wishes Eddie would talk. He can't gauge the severity if he's censoring like this. But hopefully, it won't be an issue for much longer.

"The good news is, we figured out what's wrong." He pulls over the chair, and sits down, flipping the file open and offering it for Eddie to see. The little dark spots on the latest scan are circled in highlighter. "It is the cancer come back. But it's in an operable place again, and we can have you in surgery first thing tomorrow morning."

"Figured that," he says, and looks over at the scans. Diseased or not, he's going to pay attention to images of his beautiful, beautiful brain. That is sufficient to get him to talk. "So... that's good, right? You're gonna... you know, last time?"

"Mmmhmm. Right in there." That's why they're waiting until the morning -- so that Luke can sleep, and be fresh for the operation. "And then we'll run you through chemo again."

Eddie covers the highlighted spot with his thumb, and sighs, a few deep breaths to keep control of his composure. "It's a shame." After a few moments, he looks over at Luke. "You have to fix the... this thing, you need to fix this thing."

"I will. That's what I do, yeah?" Keeping his voice calm and even. Trying to do everything he can to keep Eddie calm, and to not draw attention to the problem. He can guess what he's trying to say, for the most part, anyway.

"Took care of it last time, I'll take care of it this time."

"Yeah." He puts the palm of his hand over where his thumb was. Damnit, brain. Go back to being perfect. "I need enough time to get... heh... back to being awesome."

Luke can't help smiling. God damn it's gonna hurt, if -- when -- they end up losing this fight. More than he'd like to admit. "You'll get it. Or I'm not a McCoy."

Eddie grins at his doctor. His gratitude is very self-centered, but genuine. Hey, if trusting his doctor gives him a reason to feel a little optimistic, that's a good thing, too. He'd like to come up with a joke, but that's being a bit elusive at the moment, so he laughs, a little, instead. It serves the same purpose.
