The tedium of the chess board

Without employment and without even his cats to care for, Jervis's days are empty and nights seem even worse. At least during the day he can revise his resumé and go about courting businesses, labs, and universities. After nightfall, there's nothing to do but sit in his quiet and lonely apartment and try to distract himself from the sad state of his life.

Tonight, he sits with a warm cup of tea with milk and sugar, curled up on his sofa and watching "Alice Through the Looking Glass." It's just come to the scene where she imagines herself home, only to find she's still on the wrong side of the mirror. Nothing's quite as it should be. And then comes the Jabberwocky. If he's honest with himself, this scene has always frightened Jervis a bit. He fears for the poor girl every time. He wishes he weren't alone. He wishes he could be the brave white knight to her rescue, but that's not at all his role....
