24. As a child, what kinds of personality traits did you display?

Dr. Kleiner always says I was "a remarkably precocious child." I didn't socialize much with kids my own age growing up, so I wouldn't know. I just remember that I wanted to know about everything. I was always reading my dad's books, asking him to explain what he was doing, taking things apart to see how they worked... I wanted to figure out the world. I still do.

83. What are your pet peeves?

Being patronized. Being lied to. Being left out of something because people think I'm not capable.

55. Who is the person you respect the most, and why?

A few months ago, I would have said it was my dad. Now, it's Gordon. My dad went from scientist to soldier over the course of the last two decades of his life; Gordon did it in less than a day. And no matter how terrible things get or how overburdened he is, he never complains and never gives up, even for an instant. He amazes me.

1. What is your full name?

Alyx Michiko Vance. (That one was easy.)

62. Who would you turn to if you were in desperate need of help?

Gordon. Always.

54. Who is the most important person in your life, and why?

It used to be Dad. Now it's Gordon. When everything else in my life was coming apart, he's always been there, holding me up. If I ever lost him, I... I don't know what I'd do.

73. What is your favorite food?

Pretty much anything that's not from Xen. I'm partial to fresh raspberries, though.

56. Who are your friends? Do you have a best friend? Describe these people.

Well, there's D0G, of course. He's my pet robot. My dad made him for me when I was four, and I've been upgrading him ever since. I don't need a bodyguard much anymore, but he does a hell of a job anyway. Then there's Barney, although he's more like family than just a friend. He's one of the sweetest, most caring people I know. Can't imagine life without him.

I have a few newer friends I've met since going to Milliways. Like Annabelle--she's strong and smart and great with a pistol. And Chell... well, Chell is a hard person to figure out, sometimes. But she's compassionate and gentle and just an all-around nice person.

57. Do you have a spouse or significant other? If so, describe this person.

I really didn't know what to make of Gordon at first. My whole life I'd heard stories about the great Gordon Freeman, who fought off the Marines and rescued the Vortigaunts and who would come back someday to save us from the Combine. I didn't really believe it, but I always sort of wanted to. When you're in a desperate situation, it's tempting to think that the solution to all your problems is just around the corner, isn't it?

Then I actually met the man. The first time I saw him, he was getting the stuffing beat out of him by three metrocops. I thought there must have been some mistake--this nerd couldn't possibly be the hero everyone was raving about. At first, I hung around him mostly because I wanted to figure him out, to reconcile the man with the myth.

Then I saw him in action at Nova Prospekt, and after that we had weeks to get to know each other in Milliways. I learned two things: that Gordon Freeman is an ordinary man, and that he's one of the extraordinary ordinary men I've ever known.

(Yeah, I know that doesn't make sense. Shut up.)

6. What is your occupation?

I like to think of myself as an engineer first and a soldier second. Whether that will continue to be the case... I don't know. I really don't.
