La Vida Aburrida

Heh. I just ripped a hole in my pants.

Not anywhere compromising, though. Too bad; would've been funnier. Anyhow, welcome to the latest window into the Carpenter lifestyle. Today's installment is entitled, en español, "the boring life." I'm very glad to be done with that subject. The summer, however, is another tale. Pouring time into the road department is the general rule these days; I'm actually volunteering for work tomorrow too. I haven't worked any Saturdays this summer, and overtime pay is nice, so I figured I'd best while I have the chance.

Last weekend was the Schmidt/Baumer family reunion. Mom's gargantuan side of the family convened from all over this half of the country - we had a hundred people at the largest of the events. I knew a fairly surprising amount of them, actually. I had a pretty good time at what I was able to attend.

Also last weekend, however, were more somber tunes. Hope's dad, Linus, was killed last week in a highway accident. It was his 26th wedding anniversary...he was only 48. He really was a kind man. His mind was open, cultivated, and broad. Hope was in Italy when it happened; she managed to get back in country for the services...she did an excellent job speaking at the funeral. The Kodmans held up very well under the circumstances. I have no idea what kind of shape I'd be in after something like that.

In more blessedly mundane concerns, I managed to see Heather and some other Eminence folk when they and a Murray escort came to this end of the state a little while ago. Several of them will be going to Murray next semester, which should be a welcome addition to the posse. We played Ultimate Frisbee with Kyle Brockman, two tiny people, and a thirty-something guy who was hella intense. We also got our faces owned off. I went last night with Dan, Thomas, and Hope...I wish I hadn't. Well, I had a good times, up until the second point I scored. That was when I dived shoulder-first into the unyielding ground. It still hurts to move my right arm, which made work interesting today. At least I'm on escort duty until I request otherwise...

The Road Dept is streaky as far as my enjoyment factor goes. The company isn't exactly what I would readily choose to hang out (except maybe Joe Jones). Dan and I are in high demand for the peon work they give us summer help - the others might fall asleep, swerve all over the road, not do anything, or get lost. Since I often escort the union president, I got to proofread the addenda to their new contract and throw in a few of my own thoughts. The behind-the-scenes intrigue is as thick as ever, and I'm kinda sick of that. Plus they promoted the corn-worshipper...although they gave him the wrong call number. Which I pointed out. *snigger*

I wanted badly to trek to Mt Carroll, IL, to see Trump play the title character in a new stage adaptation of Dracula. I didn't have a lot of free time, though, and the damnable place is a stone's throw from Iowa, so that threw a redwood into my gears. I've seen pics, and it looks /epic/...can't wait for the DVD. Speaking of DVDs, Paper Thin, the '06 Studio Festival, and I Love Ashley Bailey should all be nearly done. I wish we'd filmed the 24/7 Festival. The Partners' Tale filming should be here in a few weeks.

Hopefully I'll get to see some more random / old posse folks here in Paducah before my soul expires. Murray runs have been sparse lately, but I'm holding out for the fall...Travis' wedding tomorrow might help with that. Anna Pearce is getting married tomorrow, too...Josh Linville is some time soon too, and Jessica Wallace did a few weeks ago. Madness.
