Tm: 213 A Quest [ion] of Sorrow.

Jan 24, 2008 19:17

"There's enough sorrow in the world, isn't there, without trying to invent it." -- E.M.Forster.

And what do you know of sorrow, my friend?

He is dead.

Even now the words fail me as I prepare to set them onto paper. He was upon the doorstep of his home and had watched with pride as we sailed through the gates. How could he be dead, when he was so big; and such strength in his faith of country and within sight of his home? So ready to help Merry and Pippin in their struggles to learn. So anxious for his family and his homeland. So young, so willing to battle for what he believed.

His brother had said that they heard his horn blowing the day that Sam and I left the Fellowship. Does it say nothing good for me that I did not heed its urgent call and returned back to help him?

He is dead.

And I have only thoughts of sorrow of the way that we said farewell to one another.
